- Nanoxid® ALU 110
- Nanoxid® ALU Metallic Colors
- Nanoxid® ALU Imitation Etching
General information Nanoxid®
ALU coatings combine the hardness and clarity of glass with the
advantages of organic coatings (such as easy application). They create
clear, hard and extremely thin layers only 1 to 3 µm thick, leaving the
surface and structure of the underlying metal visible.
Nanoxid® ALU can be delivered in almost any color, in gloss or matte
finishes. Naturally, the user may also mix the desired color from color
concentrates and clear varnish.
Since the layer thicknesses of Nanoxid® ALU are only 1 to 3 µm thick -
as opposed to 5-15µm for PU Systems and 20-30 µm for 2K Systems, cost
savings are produced due to greater surface coverage.
Storage and Handling Nanoxid®
ALU is a one-component system. It is recommended that the coatings be
used within 3 to 6 months of the production date. The coatings should
be stored in a cool place and protected from sunlight.
Nanoxid® ALU is flammable. When using it, do not smoke and stay away
from open lighting or other sources of fire, heat or sparks. Do not eat
while working with the material. Read the safety data sheet before
handling the material.
The hardened layer is non-toxic. The material is recommended for the
production of layers conforming to the European Norms for the Safety of
Toys, EN 71-3.
Working tools may be cleaned with alcohol or acetone.
Substrates and Use Nanoxid® ALU was developed for the decoration of aluminum.
For exterior uses, Nanoxid® ALU colors may only be used under certain
circumstances. The colorfastness typically required for outdoor use is
only partially fulfilled by the organic coloring agents, depending on
layer thickness and type of pigment.Nanoxid® ALU has passed the normal
tests used in the coatings industry (MEK, Cross-Hatch Test, Hardness,
etc.)
In order to achieve good adhesion, the metal surface must be free from
all foreign agents, such as oil. In addition, a basic precleaning is
necessary in order to remove possible layers of oil, dirt or
fingerprints, which interfere with adhesion. Therefore, we recommend
cleaning the object immediately before the application of Nanoxid® ALU.
Application Nanoxid® ALU
colors may be brushed, sprayed or applied with a roll coater. Specially
developed products are available for special application methods.
Nanoxid® ALU is ready to use and can be applied without further
thinning. Should thinning nonetheless be necessary, a recommended
thinner is available.
Nanoxid® ALU Imitation Etching and Nanoxid® ALU Metallic
Colors must be thoroughly stirred or shaken before use, since they build up a sediment layer when left standing.
Nanoxid® ALU can be used without problems at a relative humidity of up
to 60%. At higher humidity levels, the forming of the layer may be
disturbed. For example, the layer may appear matte. In such a case, it
has been shown to be helpful to warm the object to be coated before
application of the coating.
Avoid applying Nanoxid® ALU in thick layers. Otherwise, drips and runs
may result, and too thick layers crack after hardening and may come off.
Hardening Nanoxid® ALU is
hardend at 150°C - 170°C for about 15-30 minutes. If the temperature is
too low, adhesion problems may occur. If the temperature is too hot,
color banding and decomposing of the organic component of the layer
result. This may lead to the layer coming off.
A test run in the oven to be used is recommended, since heat
distribution in ovens is often highly variable. The temperature of the
object therefore often varies from the selected oven temperature.
Heating over 200°C should absolutely be avoided, since this can lead to
decomposing with certain color pigments. Forming of traces of aromatic
amines may be associated with this process.
The layer continues to harden after the thermal hardening. The final hardness is only reached after a few weeks.
